Russia has been barred from international competitions since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Its national team was excluded from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and did not take part in qualifying for this year's tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

In an interview with broadcaster Sky Sports, Infantino said the ban had failed to achieve its goals.

"We have to [look at reinstating Russia], definitely, because this ban has not achieved anything," he said. "It has just created more frustration and hatred."

He added that allowing Russian players to compete internationally could help ease tensions.

"Having girls and boys from Russia being able to play football games in other parts of Europe would help," Infantino said.

Russia has also been excluded from the European championships.

The executive committee of European football’s governing body, UEFA, is due to meet on February 11.

UEFA head Aleksander Ceferin has said Russia will not be readmitted until the war in Ukraine ends.

Russia’s senior men’s team has been limited to friendly matches, most recently playing Chile and Peru in November, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
